The Bioengineering Centre was established to facilitate research and foster university/industry liaison in the area of bioengineering and recombinant DNA technology. The Bioengineering Centre specialises in cloning and expression of recombinant biopharmaceuticals. Its emphasis is on production of complex proteins in CHO and other mammalian cell systems.

Recent scientific advantages in the knowledge of genome sequences and in the ability to clone DNA into mammalian and microbial cells are having major impact in a number of areas.
The commercial application of these scientific advances involves research and development in a number of multidisciplinary fields; the Bioengineering Centre provides a mechanism to facilitate this multidisciplinary research.
