OLYMPIC WINTER INSTITUTE OF SPORT AUSTRALIA (OWIA).

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) along with the Australian Olympic Committee formed the Australian Institute of Winter Sports after the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998. In July 2001, the organisation was renamed the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA).

The OWIA employs ten coaching staff and provides sport program opportunities for up to 23 athletes across six winter sport disciplines: alpine skiing, mogul skiing, aerial skiing, snowboarding, short track speed skating and figure skating

Scholarship selections

Scholarships are awarded to athletes who are Australian citizens and who have the proven or potential ability to achieve a top ten outcome at an Olympic Winter Games, World Championship or World Cup level of competition.

Scholarships run from 1 July to 30 June and scholarship holders benefit from a full range of AIS services including:

  • access to suitable training facilities 
  • high performance coaching as directed by the Head Coach
  • fitness and strength testing/evaluation and training programs under the direction or supervision of qualified personnel
  • performance reporting and supervision
  • training camps as directed by the Head Coach
  • air and ground travel to and from, and accommodation at, international and domestic competitions as approved by the OWIA CEO
  • sports science and sports medicine services as approved or directed by the OWIA CEO, including access to AIS services as full non-residential scholarship holders
  • team uniform, training and competition apparel
  • assistance through the AIS Athlete Career and Education program with career and personal development
  • access to the services of the Australian Olympic Committee's Olympic Job Opportunity Program
  • eligibility for the Australian Olympic Committee's Medal Incentive Scheme as detailed by the Committee and as amended from time to time.
