ST JOHN'S CATHOLIC COLLEGE, DARWIN
Stong in Faith Strong in Education
Principal Mr David Johns
St John’s Catholic College is a unique Catholic co-educational day and boarding school. Its uniqueness lies in its environment, its history, its tradition and culture and the diversity of students.
The College is idyllically located in the beautiful surrounds of the Darwin Botanical Gardens. Its two campuses Chevalier (Middle School) and Hartzer (Senior School) are connected by an overhead bridge that spans these gardens.
St John’s is proud of its history and the strong tradition of its founders, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH). This, and the college motto, ‘Strong in Faith’ guide our values and actions.
St John's College is unlike any other school in Australia -we care for students from an array of Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities across the Top End and beyond. We also have students from West Papua, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Sub Continent. This mix includes students from our Darwin community as well as a number of Defence Force families, who contribute a great deal to the College.
The St John's College community is richer for the experiences that all these students bring. We welcome diversity as it drives our academic programme in a way that demands engagement of the learning process regardless of cultural background. The mission statement of the College seeks to challenge students to develop strength in the areas of FAITH, EDUCATION, COMMUNITY and TRADITION. We are committed to understanding the social and emotional needs of each student in striving to educate the 'whole person', as it is when students feel safe and valued that they are able to contribute to our community and realise their full potential.
Our history and traditions stipulate that we engage the whole person as we provide opportunities for our students to succeed at the College and prepare for making a difference in the World of Work. Our students are caring, compassionate, confident and repeatedly demonstrate their strength of leadership in the 'five Rs':
· Relationship building
· Respect – giving and gaining
· Responsibility – for their actions
· Reliability – trusted to do the right thing
· Risk taking – facing up to challenges and finding creative solutions to problems.
The Boarding residences at St John’s are safe, friendly and well resourced. Students are supported in their study sessions and have access to computers and the library. A wide range of supervised activities are undertaken on weekends.
We have excellent staff, a beautiful setting, and facilities that continue to expand as our community grows. I invite you to consider St John's as the school for those you value and love.
St John's Catholic College Middle School is located on the Chevalier campus and offers a comprehensive and challenging curriculum for students in Years 7 to 9. The curriculum prepares students for the Senior School and aims to instill a life-long love of learning.
The curriculum guided by the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework ensures students study subjects for all learning areas, Religious Education, Arts, English and ESL, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Science, SOSE, Technology and Enterprise.
The Chevalier campus is well resourced with an auditorium, computer labs and a library which also functions as a homework centre. Pods of laptops are available for classroom use and each classroom is equipped with a Smartboard. This along with a variety of programs and services enables students to feel confident and supported in their learning.
Entering the senior campus is an exciting and wonderful step as students begin to follow their own individual interests and begin to specialise in particular areas and subjects. The curriculum is diverse and offers a wide variety of subjects to meet the needs and interests of our students. The College offers academic subjects to enable students to enter university as well as VET subjects and apprenticeship opportunities. St John's aims to live out our mission of excellence and strength in faith, education, community, and tradition. We have, as our vision a school of excellence is all aspects of education, a school which builds relationships, develops faith and understanding, personal responsibility and compassion.
Our students become creative, independent lifelong learners, caring and involved citizens who appreciate the uniqueness of each person and value the differences of culture and background of each person
The boarding houses are managed by the Heads of Boarding and staffed by full time, part time and casual house parents. These people are chosen for their Christian values, qualifications and experience in working with children. Their mission is to care for your child, keeping them safe, happy and healthy and to promote and encourage their education and to provide them with a wide range of sporting and recreational activities.
We recognise that boarding is seldom, if ever the same as living at home, but those students who come prepared to grasp the many and varied opportunities that boarding house life offers, thoroughly enjoy the experience and make lifelong friends.
AFL School of Excellence Program
On 18 May 2012, St John's students gathered to celebrate the official launch of the AFL School of Excellence program, which was officially launched by NT Minister for Education Dr Christopher Burns, CEO Catholic Education Mr Michael Avery, Bishop Eugene Hurley, AFLNT CEO Tony Frawley and Western Bulldogs players Zephaniah Skinner and Ayce Cordy.
The goal of the program is to encourage students to reach their full potential in football while fostering and developing life skills that will equip students for future endeavours. The program is designed to support and promote the vision statement, mission and values of St John's Catholic College. Primarily this will be achieved through the following key messages:
Tradition: St John's has a long and rich history in AFL, with four individuals (Michael Long, Maurice Rioli, Nathan Buckley, Andrew McLeod) winning 5 Norm Smith Medals. This shows that through hard work, come rewards and students should strive to achieve their goals and set their own legacy for history to judge their efforts.
Education: Having a strong education provides opportunities further in life and without education we cannot reach our full potential. St John’s Catholic College is a strong educational institute, which provides students with a rich education through a range of opportunities.
Faith: Everyone has personal gifts that they bring to the Program and these are to be recognised and celebrated.
Community: Our community provides us support and we in turn will give back to our community through sharing our time and new found experience.
