without sounding negative, i believe every child is gifted... but what do you do when you have a senior student in your class that has no musical talent about them? Are there any other teachers that have come across this... if so, what advice do you give?

Hi Mrs Jackson,

I disagree with you when you say you have a student with no talent. This child may have a passion for music, that alone is a talent. They may not be a natural on an instrument or have the voice of an angel but watch their feet when the music is playing. Often great rythym could be there talent/gift. Thats all someone needs to start out. If your student has a lack for rythym.. teach rythym. Go from there. I think this child would only take the course in the first place if music was a passion. Give it another chance and dont give up.

Good luck.

And remember.. just to feel the rythym. This will guide your student.

i agree with you SallyAnneMurphy to a point, i know what you are saying, but i feel that some students take music as an elective because they believe it is a 'bludge', these students are easily identified. The students with a passion for music are gifted, the students are want a so called 'bludge' class are not. I hope you agree.

This could also be the case Mrs Jackson. If it is maybe you should encourage the student to find their passion in music. Music is something for everyone. There is something for everyone in music. Whether it be a soft ballad they enjoy or one of those "head banging" groups. There is something out there for everyone. Find their passion. Find out what music they listen to.. go from there. Omce you know that you can base what you teach them around this genre.

Hope this helps.

I study music, and i absolutely love it. But i feel that i'm ostrasized because i'm not as good as the others in my class, or so my teacher believes, and this makes me feel like i shouldn't be in the class. I feel that i have talent, as do my parents and many of my friends. Just because i don't sing like Celine Dion or Whitney Houston etc. doesn't mean i don't have talent does it? If my teacher was a bit more positive, i reckon that i'd do so much better. So i agree with you SallyAnne, give them a go and encourage them. I can speak for myself and many others when i say that we don't tak music because it's a 'bludge'. We're there because we want to be. So just give those students a go! I'm sure that you'll see a big improvement if you encourage them!
