With nearly every school-leaver becoming an overnight holder of a driver’s licence, it seems unbelievable that with all the academic subjects taught, the authorities haven’t considered driver education to be an important subject.

In some overseas countries, student driver training is a major part of their education system – maybe they know something that our academics and politicians have yet to grasp.

One of the big challenges with training less experienced drivers to be more aware of the risks starts with their understanding, skill and behaviour.

The current licence test does little more than achieve the lowest common denominator.

After all, a three-point turn, parallel park and a lap around the block could hardly equip a new driver with the knowledge to handle the real world of driving and surviving.

The responsibility of learning how to safely handle a vehicle will come back to those parents who want their children to have a better chance of surviving and not becoming a statistic.
