Mount St. Bernard College was originally established on the Atherton Tableland in the town of Herberton in 1921 as a boarding college for both primary and secondary students. Its mission was to meet the educational needs of students from remote areas of the Far North and North West of Queensland.

The Sisters of Mercy identify their particular vocation in the Church as sharing in the Mission of Mercy of Christ, through apostolic service to those in need.

Mount St. Bernard College, strives to reflect in its structures, curriculum and practices, and in the quality of relationships within it, the particular spirit of Mercy which Christ Himself, lived and taught. The Sisters continue to have a strong presence at the College and the original ethos fostered by Catherine McAuley remains unchanged. Catherine McAuley’s vision was to provide the means whereby young people, especially women from disadvantaged backgrounds would be able to be educated.

Today, the Catholic Education Service, Diocese of Cairns strive to provide a safe and secure environment where young people of all backgrounds, regardless of status, can enjoy the privilege of a quality education which reflects a Catholic ethos and Christian values.

It is an expectation that all staff embraces the College tradition, and actively support and live out the College Motto and the Mission Statement.
